Lift Station vs. Ejector Pit: What's The Difference?
Operators use the terms interchangeably but they're different systems with different treatment needs.
Ejector pits
Small, building-scale (single basement, typically <1,000 gal). Serve fixtures below the building sewer line. Regulated by local plumbing code.
Lift stations
Municipal or campus-scale (thousands to millions of gal/day). Pump sewage between sewer system zones. Regulated by state DEP.
Why the treatment differs
Ejector pits: encapsulation dosing, single dose point. Lift stations: calcium nitrate or iron salt feed, multi-point dosing, ORP monitoring.
