Schools K-12
Safe, low-impact chemistry that keeps classrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and restrooms healthy for students and staff.
Engineered programs for schools k-12.
Luften designs preventative and reactive programs tailored to your facility — automated dispensing, high-performance chemistry, and full-service support, without adding labor to your team.
A school building has a small custodial staff, a fixed budget, and a community that notices smell immediately — students mention it, teachers escalate it, and parents repeat it at board meetings. The buildings themselves work against you: restrooms with heavy short-interval use, a cafeteria kitchen serving hundreds of covers in 90 minutes, a gym and locker block, and long breaks when the building sits empty and every floor trap slowly evaporates.
The four sources that generate almost every school complaint
First, restroom floor drains and urinal traps: biofilm in the drain throat and dried traps produce the ammonia-and-sewer smell that no amount of surface cleaning touches. Second, the cafeteria dish pit and its trench drain, plus the grease interceptor — the source of both peak-hour kitchen smell and the drain flies that show up in the serving line. Third, locker rooms and equipment storage, where wet uniforms and gear sit in unventilated cages. Fourth, the dumpster or compactor area, especially where it sits near a bus loop or a classroom window wing.
Chemistry and equipment appropriate for children
This is the setting where product selection matters most. We use low-VOC, fragrance-free or minimally fragranced chemistry, no ozone generators in occupied space, and no aerosol propellants. Delivery is metered and enclosed rather than sprayed by hand, so exposure is controlled and consistent. Current Safety Data Sheets go on file with the district and stay on site — most districts require this before a single unit is installed, and asthma-management plans mean the nurse's office often reviews it too.
Working around the school calendar
Service is scheduled outside instructional hours and around testing windows. The two calendar events that generate the most odor tickets are the return from winter break and the return from summer: an unoccupied building means no water down the floor drains, traps dry out, and sewer gas enters through the seal that is supposed to block it. We time a visit before re-occupancy specifically to prime traps and verify dosing, which removes a predictable wave of first-week complaints.
What a district-level program covers
For a single building, one monthly visit handles restroom and cafeteria drains, the grease interceptor, gym and locker units, and the waste area, with a written log left for the custodial supervisor. Across a district, the same route covers multiple schools under one flat monthly fee per building, which is what lets a facilities director defend the line item: it is a fixed preventive cost replacing unpredictable overtime, emergency drain calls, and repeat parent complaints.
Where odor actually originates.
We map every facility zone to the engineering and chemistry that solves it — no generic playbook.
Restrooms
Metered biological dosing of floor drains and urinal traps, plus trap priming to stop sewer gas after breaks.
Cafeteria & kitchen
Grease interceptor dosing between pump-outs and foaming treatment of dish-pit and trench drains where flies breed.
Gymnasium, locker rooms & equipment storage
Wall units and locker-level treatment for absorbed sweat in uniforms, pads, and unventilated gear cages.
Dumpster & compactor area
Weather-rated neutralization where waste sits near bus loops, entrances, or classroom windows.
The equipment behind the program.
Drain & Restroom Program
Monthly biological dosing for restroom, cafeteria, and custodial drains, scheduled outside instructional hours.
LUFTEN Wall Nebulizer
Locker rooms, gym corridors, and trash rooms — enclosed metered delivery, low-VOC, no aerosols.
Grease Interceptor Treatment
Enzymatic dosing and cap measurement for cafeteria interceptors to prevent backups and inspection findings.
