- 1Pump the elevator pit dry monthly — standing water is the entire odor source.
- 2Install a discreet dispenser on the pit wall (out of the technician's service path).
- 3Add a floor-drain trap primer if the pit drains to a sanitary line.
- 4Never dump degreaser in the pit — it goes straight to the ejector pit and creates a second problem.
- 5Coordinate treatment with your elevator contractor; they'll refuse service if they smell chemicals they don't recognize.
- 6Add a bio-mat under the elevator cab counterweight to absorb hydraulic drips.
- 7For hydraulic elevators, watch for oil sheen — an odor issue almost always signals a leaking piston seal.
- 8Ventilate the shaft: a passive vent at the top is code-required and often blocked.
- 9Fog the shaft quarterly to reach the top of the hoistway where dispensers can't.
- 10Log every pit cleaning — hotel operators need the record when an inspector or a guest asks.
